Tips for Choosing Proper Kitchen or Bath Windows for a Remodel

Kitchens and bathrooms are not only two of the most highly used rooms in your home, they’re also two of the most popular rooms to renovate, according to home style experts and Remodeling Magazine’s annual Cost vs. Value Report.
With any kitchen or bath renovation, there are many aspects to consider — cabinets, counters, floors, etc. And whether you’re making small updates or completely gutting the room, make sure to include window replacement in your list of must-haves.
How can new windows benefit a room? With a style that fits your personality, the right window provides natural light and ventilation to help create a beautiful, functional and comfortable living space.

Keep three key elements in mind when choosing a window for your kitchen or bath:
Choose a window style with function in mind.
Kitchen windows are often placed above counters or sinks, while bathroom windows tend to be located above tubs, beside showers or above bathroom counters. The placement of these windows can sometimes make them hard to reach, so choosing a window style that’s easy to open and close is a must.
Sliding windows or casement windows — which crank open and closed — are good options for hard-to-reach areas like above a counter or sink.
Ventilation is another key consideration for kitchens and bathrooms. A properly placed window can help decrease the amount of heat and moisture retained from cooking or showering. Awning windows, which can be pulled in or pushed out, are a good option for ventilation, and perform best when placed close to the ceiling or above eye level.
Select a window material that fits your needs.
Kitchens and baths require windows that are easy to clean and can withstand moisture, so materials like vinyl or fiberglass are ideal.
Fiberglass windows can withstand extreme heat and cold, are energy-efficient and can have the quality look of painted wood. Vinyl windows are easy to care for and don’t require additional painting or staining.
However, if wood is a better fit for the style of your home, make sure to select a finish that will hold up against stains and moisture, and be prepared to do a little more cleaning and upkeep.
Consider additional features and options.
If you want to maintain privacy while maximizing natural light in the bathroom, choose a window with obscure or opaque glass.
Or, you can streamline the look and function of your kitchen or bath with between-the-glass cordless blinds or shades, which minimize allergens and eliminate clutter. Because these window coverings are tucked between the panes of glass, you won’t have to worry about moisture or stains.
Take it one step further and motorize the blinds or shades. Controlled via a remote or home automation system, the blinds or shades can customize the level of light in the bathroom or kitchen.

I definitely agree, when it comes to choosing windows for the bathroom and kitchen, you'll want to find ones that can take a lot more wear and tear than the windows you might put up in a living room. Over time, the windows in the kitchen and bathroom are likely to get very dirty because of soap, food, steam, smoke, etc., residue, so it's important to find one that cleans well. Also, as the article points out, it might also help to find ones that are energy efficient because of the amount of heat and cold air that will be going through these rooms.

Yes, I agree with you and Simon. As windows in these rooms become dirty very soon it is better to choose double slider windows. They have double sashes that move side to side and can swing into the room, making it easier to clean the panels and direct airflow in a more controlled manner. Vinyl will provide energy efficiency. Such windows you can find here: http://directpro.ca

I love natural light and I would want to have more of it in my bathroom. It does seem like a good idea to use an opaque glass window. it might also be smart to look into something like a casement window as well.

I agree that when looking for new windows you should consider ones that fit your needs. I would imagine that finding them in the right style and frame material would also be really important. I'm remodeling my kitchen and I always wanted to have sliding windows so I'll have to consider that type when I go shopping.

Blinds are wonderfully adjustable; the slats are able to stay tightly closed for privacy and light control, or tilt open to allow just the amount of light you choose. When they are pulled up and stacked at the top of the window, they leave an unobstructed view.

I love that though this blog is about design, it also makes sure to include the significance of choosing the right material, and functionality aside from aesthetics. Some people may choose the most beautiful windows, but if they are not efficient, they may not be the right choice after all. Thanks for some great tips!

I liked that you pointed out that you should make sure that you have ventilation in your bathroom. That does seem like a good thing to be aware of when you want to make sure that the renovation goes well. I wouldn't want to realize I forgot some detail and have to go back and add it after the renovation is over.

Yes! I completely agreed with the fact that kitchen and bathroom both the rooms are highly used and require renovation quickly in comparison to other rooms. Therefore, before any kind of renovation, we should first follow some basic instructions from experts and while implementing these methods, we can easily get a better kitchen and bathroom.

Kitchen and bathroom remodeling is one of the important part of the home renovation. When you do this type of renovation, first you should make a plan for this, and according to your budget you make a plan for the designing part. But most of the time you don't give attention for the kitchen and bathroom windows. There are different variety of window materials such as hardwood, vinyl, laminate type etc. And from that you have choose the best material. You select the window material based on your kitchen and window size.

I love that you mentioned how you should always choose a window style with function in mind. There are many different kinds of windows that look nice; however, if you can find a window that is also functional, then you can kill two birds with one stone. My wife and I have been thinking about remodeling our bathroom, but we had not thought of first deciding on a window and then moving from there. Thanks again, and we are going to do this right!

You make an interesting point that choosing a window style that's easy to open and close is a must, since it can be difficult to reach them. My husband and I are thinking about remodeling our kitchen, since ours is really old and outdated. We want something that looks much more modern and bright. Although, we're not very savvy when it comes to home renovations or construction, so we'll probably have to call a professional to help us get the job done.

This is some really good information about glass replacement. It is good to know that it would be smart to select a type of window material that will meet your needs. I liked that you pointed out that vinyl and fiberglass are good options. That is good for me to know because I want to replace my bathrooms windows this summer.

Thanks for pointing out that it would be best to select a finish that will be able to withstand moisture and stains when choosing wood as the material. I will keep that in mind since my husband has been really interested in replacing our kitchen flooring with wood. From what I know, he was inspired by a photo in a magazine that showed how elegant a wooden kitchen floor is.

My husband and I are remodeling our home, and we aren't sure which windows we want to replace the old ones. Your article had some great tips for choosing remodeling windows, and I liked how you said to consider the type of material we want. Since kitchen windows need to withstand moisture, we should choose fiberglass or vinyl. Thanks for the post; we'll keep this in mind when choosing the windows best for us.

I like that you pointed out that the window must be easy to open and close when the placement is hard to reach. I will keep that in mind since the window in our bathroom is high up because it is not used that much. We just need to replace it because it was broken when the ball from our neighbor hit it yesterday.

I really appreciate your tip on how a well-placed window can help alleviate the heat that is in your kitchen. My wife really likes to cook, and she wants to get a kitchen remodel for her birthday. I will be sure to tell my wife that we should try and include a big window in the remodel so we can stay cool in the kitchen!

Thanks for the suggestion to place windows above counters or sinks and choose a style that's easy to open and close too. These will come in handy for my sister's plan to remodel her home later this year. Aside from these, any tips on how to choose a contractor who can help make her dream designs real?
